Sogrape acquires Stevens Garnier - By Decanter.com




Stevens Garnier is one of the UK’s most-established wine merchants. It began in the 1970s and now has a portfolio covering all of the world’s major wine regions.

Sogrape Vinhos, one of its first agencies, is Portugal’s biggest wine company, with a turnover of €185m and 1300ha of vineyards.

Its holdings include Callabriga, Sandeman, Mateus and Quinta Azeveda in Portugal as well as Finca Flichman in Argentina, Framingham in New Zealand and Chateau Los Boldos in Chile.

Sogrape is planning further investment in the Oxford-based firm, it said in a press release.

Sogrape president Salvador Guedes said, ‘Stevens Garnier and Sogrape have a long-standing and successful partnership in the UK and Sogrape is delighted to make a full acquisition of the company.

‘We are committed to investing in the company’s future to the benefit of all the brand owners and customers.’

Chinese government approves wine investment fund

The Chinese government has finally approved the first-ever Chinese investment fund specialising in wine.

"The Dinghong Fund (Dinghong means 'In Red') plans to invest in €110m on wine over a five-year period starting this year, according to a representative from Bordeaux negociant Vintex & les Vignobles Grégoire, which will manage the fund’s wine buying." - Say Decanter.com

This is a huge step that demonstrates the growing importance of wine in today's economy and, especially, for Chine.
Even though this investment fund will be focusing his attention on French wines, in Bordeaux, it is a first step towards the a global investment market based on wine products.
Shangai's wine exchange, that was approved earlier this year by Shangai's government, is another example of this.
